Unter der Sonne des Südens und hinter den Mauern der Segregation entstand die Musik der amerikanischen Farbigen. Sie half ihnen über zweieinhalb Jahrhunderte hindurch, die schwere Last der Unfreiheit zu ertragen. Was sich in ihr niedergeschlagen hat, wurzelt in einer christlichen Vorgeschichte. Die geistlichen Lieder der Neger, die erhabenen Spirituals und Gospels, waren von allem Anfang an Volkskunst und gesungene Poesie. Ihr Rhythmus ist von so großer Bedeutung, daß Jean Paul Sartre von ihm sagte, er stelle die Verbindung zwischen den vielfältigen Aspekten der schwarzen Seele her.
