25 Jahre nach seinem letzten Studio-Album scheint es sich Ex-The-Band-Schlagzeuger und -Stimme Levon Helm noch einmal überlegt zu haben. Diverse Verrisse seiner letzten Werke, ein Kamp gegen den Kehlkopfkrebs und ein musikalischer Neubeginn gemeinsam mit seiner Tochter Amy lagen hinter ihm - und erstaunlicherweise orientierte er sich bei seinem neuen Album noch weiter in der Vergangenheit, genauer: bei den Liedern seiner Kindheit, den Country- und Blues-Stücken, die seine Eltern sangen.
Mit kleinen Arrangements und wenig Elektronik machte er sich ans Werk und lieferte ein Album ab, das nicht perfekt ist, aber trotzdem (oder vielleicht gerade deshalb) unglaublich authentisch rüberkommt. Hier will keiner irgendjemandem etwas beweisen, sondern hier wird einfach nach bester Hausmusik-Manier gesungen, geklampft oder gequetscht, ganz im Geiste von The Band, aber dennoch in einem ganz eigenen Stil.
Grundehrliches, grammydekoriertes Comeback-Album, weit entfernt vom poplastigen Hochglanz-Country mit tiefen Wurzeln in der Vergangenheit, aber auch einigen Anleihen von aktuellen Interpreten. |
